By 2015, Paddle Nepal had grown well beyond its humble beginnings. We had expanded our team, our rivers, and the adventures we offered. But one principle remained unchanged:

Never stop learning.

From the very beginning, we have believed that every guest deserves a guide who is not only experienced, but trained to the highest possible standards. We also believe that our guides deserve every opportunity to develop their skills, pursue excellence, and return safely home after every trip. Safety, excellence, and continual learning have always been at the heart of what we do.

In February 2015, that commitment reached an important milestone.

Under the guidance of IRF Instructor Trainer Mark Hirst—an internationally respected whitewater professional, Rescue 3 instructor, and founder of Lapin Koskikoulu in Iceland—Paddle Nepal’s entire guide team undertook the International Rafting Federation (IRF) certification pathway.

Paddle Nepal became the first rafting company in Nepal to have its entire guide team achieve International Rafting Federation (IRF) certification. At the time, Paddle Nepal was the only Nepalese rafting company recognized by the IRF as a Tour Operator whose guides were all IRF certified, and one of only two such companies in Asia.

For us, this was never about collecting certificates or badges.

It was about investing in our people. It was about ensuring that every guide on the river shared the same commitment to safety, skill, professionalism, and delivering exceptional experiences for every guest who paddled with us.

That milestone also marked the beginning of another journey.

Mark Hirst of Lapin Koskikoulu IRF and Rescue 3 Instructor During that process, Mark became much more than an instructor. He became a valued mentor, a trusted friend, and a generous supporter of Paddle Nepal. Over the years, he shared his knowledge, experience, encouragement, and friendship, helping shape both Nim’s journey and the growth of Paddle Nepal.

Nim Bahadur Magar IRF Instructor Paddle NepalUnder Mark’s mentorship, Nim embarked on the rigorous pathway toward becoming an IRF Instructor. It was a goal that demanded years of guiding and coaching experience, continual learning and adaptation, as well as both practical and classroom assessment—one he would proudly achieve the following year.

We remain deeply grateful to Mark for the role he has played in Paddle Nepal’s journey, and for a friendship that continues to this day.

Today, both Paddle Nepal and the IRF continue to evolve. The IRF has introduced new accreditation pathways for rafting operators, with further changes still underway. This post celebrates an important milestone in our journey and the standards that helped shape it.

Twenty years on, our philosophy remains unchanged. Our guide team continues to invest in training, maintain internationally recognized certifications, and keep raising the bar.

We believe that extraordinary adventures begin with extraordinary people who never stop learning.
